A room-by-room inventory you fill out on a quiet afternoon — the single most useful document a homeowner can have on file before any loss, storm or otherwise.

After a major loss, insurers ask you to list what you owned. From memory, under stress, people recall a fraction of it. An inventory made on a quiet afternoon — even a rough one — is worth real money later, and it takes about an hour with your phone. Fastest method: video every room, narrating brands and rough values, then log the big-ticket items below.

The one-hour version

Walk every room with your phone on video, opening closets and drawers, narrating as you go
Photograph serial numbers of electronics and appliances
Photograph receipts/appraisals for anything valuable (jewelry, instruments, tools, art)
Save it all to a cloud folder — an inventory that burns or floods with the house is not an inventory
Repeat once a year, or after major purchases

Printable log — columns: Item & brand, Room, Serial # (if any), Approx. year bought, Approx. value.

Check your special limits: Standard policies cap certain categories (jewelry, firearms, cash, collectibles) at low sub-limits. If your inventory surfaces items above those caps, ask your agent about scheduling them — before the loss, which is the only time it can be done.
